Pittsburgh Steelers Terrible Towel App for Android
Are you a diehard Steelers fan with an Android powered mobile phone? The Terrible Towel App for Android ($.99) gives you a portable Terrible Towel that you can carry with you anywhere you go.
Need a “real” Terrible Towel? You can order Pittsburgh Steelers Original Terrible Towel at Amazon.com.
UPDATE (8/25/2011) – Apparently, the Terrible Towel app has been removed from the Android Market and is no longer available.
The main feature of the app is a Terrible Towel displayed on your screen that can play the Steelers “He We Go Steelers” tribute song. To play the song you can either shake the phone, or simply press the screen with your thumb or finger while the Terrible Towel image is displayed. We found touching the screen to be far easier and much more reliable. Shaking the phone met with very mixed results. Typically the music started playing and then cut off a few seconds later even though we were still shaking it.
You can access extra features by tapping the menu button. From here you can select “Steelers News” or “Terrible Extras.” The Steelers News is an ESPN feed of Steelers stories, schedule, stats, and updates.
Terrible Extras include a Photo Gallery, images of all current Steelers Super Bowl rings, and Twitter updates from Steelers players.
The Twitter feed doesn’t seem to be optimized for mobile devices. You have to magnify the screen to read them.
It’s a rather fun app for the Steelers fan, but could use some improvement. The app is slow to load. It takes about 5 seconds to open on our Motorola Droid and that can be a long time if you are trying to quickly startup the celebratory music after a Steelers TD. Update: The developer has pushed out an update that cuts the load time down to about 1-2 seconds. As we mentioned, we found that shaking the phone to get the music to play doesn’t work well at all. This isn’t really much of an issue since simply pressing the screen is a much preferred way to play the music.
