Live PGA Golf Comes to NBC Sports Live Extra App for iPhone, iPad, and Android

When NBC Sports rebranded it’s NBC Sports Live Extra app last summer, it promised PGA golf would be among the live sports available through the app. Beginning with this week’s Sony Open, users will finally be able to watch PGA Tour golf.

Their is, however, a pretty significant catch. At least, there is for this week’s event. The Sony Open will be broadcast only on the Golf Channel. Thus, to actually watch the tournament through the NBC Sports Live Extra App, you’ll need to be a Comcast TV subscriber and authenticate through the app using your Comcast credentials.

What remains to be seen is whether this authentication requirement will be the same for PGA tournaments broadcast on regular over-the-air NBC. Based on past actions, my guess is that those events will be available to everyone just as Notre Dame Football, NFL Sunday Night Football, and last year’s Ryder Cup were available without cable authentication.

The next scheduled NBC PGA event will be the Waste Management Phoenix Open the first weekend of February. So, we’ll see at that point whether the NBC aired events will be free to all. The real meat of NBC’s PGA coverage doesn’t begin until the end of February. NBC will broadcast the final two rounds of each PGA Tour event beginning with the Accenture Match Play Championship in the last week of February and running through the Valero Texas Open the week before the Masters in April.
