Fox Will No Longer Black Out Saturday Games on MLB.TV beginning in 2014

The one big drawback to MLB.tv is the blackouts. As part of the new MLB deal with Fox and TNT, one small but significant blackout rule will be lifted beginning in 2014.

According to the Press Release by MLB, Saturday afternoon games on MLB.tv and MLB Extra Innings will no longer be blacked out by Fox beginning with the 2014 season. It was also confirmed by MLB_PR on Twitter:

This is a relatively small step in the big blackout picture, but it’s still a significant step. It’s one that every fan and MLB.tv subscriber hopes will lead to an overall change in the frequently absurd MLB blackout rules.

Also included in the deal, Fox and TNT will continue to broadcast the MLB Playoffs through 2021. There is also apparently some language regarding “TV Everywhere” rights to stream televised regular and post-season games and other MLB-related programming online and through mobile devices. We’ll have to wait and see how exactly that manifests itself, but I’m guessing it’ll will be require authentication with a TV provider. (In other words, you’ll have to be a TNT subscriber through cable/satellite… but this is just an educated guess on my part)
