New York Knicks Official App is Not Exactly the Jeremy Lin of Mobile Apps

The New York Knicks recently released their Official mobile apps for both iPhone and Android. While it’s not quite the worst official pro team app I’ve seen, it does leave something to be desired.

The app features news, real time scores, videos, photos, social media feeds, schedule, and player cards with bios.

The design and layout are fine, but the app suffers from some functionality issues. The iPhone version seems quite stable, but it breaks one of my cardinals rules of app development. Some of the links, video to be specific, take you outside the app. That’s a weak feature even for an individual developing apps at home in their spare time. For a professional sports team with access to plenty of capital and resources, it’s just unacceptable.

The Android version is worse. It crashes constantly and loads slowly. It’s frustrating to the point that it’s almost pointless to use.

We certainly hope these issues will be sorted out with updates, and they are certainly fixable issues. What’s really hard to understand is how an app like this from a professional sports team even gets to the market in the first place.

Cost: Free.
