U.S. Open Golf Championship 2011 iPhone & iPad App

The US Open gets underway this week at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, MD. If you can’t be in front of the TV for all the coverage, the U.S. Open Golf Championship iPhone app has you covered. The App has been fully updated for 2011 and is compatible with the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch.

After you download and open the U.S. Open Golf Championship app, you’re greeted with a menu of options. New in this year’s edition are Photos and a Radio feature that will live stream ESPN Radio coverage of the tournament.

The course map features nice graphics and detailed hole descriptions. Plus, video flyovers of each hole.

The home run feature is the live video. In addition to the hole-by-hole video flyovers and video segments, you will get live streaming video of featured groups and dedicated holes. While, it’s not the same as the TV broadcast, it makes an excellent supplement to the live coverage while still a fine way to watch the tournament on it’s own. The groups they follow typically feature marquee players.

UPDATE (6/17/2011): Featured coverage includes the group of Rory McIlroy (current leader), Dustin Johnson, and Phil Mickelson. Streaming video quality on the iPhone is excellent.

US Open Golf App Overview

When it comes to event based apps like this, the rest test of greatness comes during the event. Based on the quality of last years app, and the additional features, (particularly live radio), and the fact that it is free, this app promises to be a real winner and a must have for the pro golf fan. The bummer for Android owners is, much like the Masters, there is only an iOS version of the US Open App.

UPDATE (6/17/2011): Live streaming video and radio are top notch. No issues whatsoever.
